ABOUT Deep Purple

Deep Purple is a hard rock band formed in Hertfordshire, England, in 1968, which is considered to be one of the pioneers of heavy metal and hard rock, although they also incorporated elements of progressive rock. Throughout their career they have sold over 100 million records worldwide, and were recognised as the loudest band in the world by the Guinness Book of Records in the 1970s.

The band has undergone multiple line-up changes and remained inactive from 1976 to 1984. Their first four line-ups are often labelled “Mark I”, “II”, “III” and “IV”. The “Mark II”, consisting of Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) and Roger Glover (bass), was the most successful and best-selling line-up, and remained active from 1969-1973 and from 1984-1989, when the relationship between Blackmore and the remaining musicians became irreparable. Their current line-up, which features Steve Morse in place of Blackmore and Don Airey in place of Lord, has been active since 2002.
