ABOUT THE BAND
**Placebo** is a British alternative rock band formed in London in 1994 by singer and guitarist Brian Molko and bassist Stefan Olsdal. From the beginning, they stood out for their androgynous image, bold lyrics, and dark, melancholic sound, built around distorted guitars and Molko’s unmistakable nasal voice. Their self-titled debut album, *Placebo* (1996), introduced their distinctive style, while their second album, *Without You I’m Nothing* (1998), earned widespread critical acclaim and helped establish them as a major presence in the British music scene. At a time when Britpop dominated the charts, Placebo offered something different, gaining attention with songs like “Nancy Boy” and “Every You Every Me,” the latter becoming especially well known after appearing on the soundtrack of the film *Cruel Intentions*.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Placebo continued to evolve, incorporating electronic sounds and synth-rock influences into their music. Although the band went through several changes in its drumming lineup, Molko and Olsdal remained its central creative force. Albums such as *Sleeping with Ghosts* (2003) and *Meds* (2006) explored darker, more personal subjects, including mental health struggles, addiction, and the growing sense of disconnection in modern society. Following a lengthy break from recording, the band returned in 2022 with *Never Let Me Go*, their eighth studio album. The record showed that Placebo had retained its signature sound while adapting it to a new era, blending intense songwriting with modern electronic elements to explore the fears, uncertainties, and emotional struggles of life in the 21st century.
