ABOUT THE BAND
Aphrodite’s Child was a Greek progressive/psychedelic rock band formed in 1967 in Athens, best known for their ambitious concept albums and international hit “Rain and Tears.” The band was founded by multi-instrumentalist and composer Vangelis (Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou), vocalist and bassist Demis Roussos, drummer Loukas Sideras, and guitarist Silver Koulouris. Relocating to Paris in 1968, they quickly gained fame with their Baroque-pop single “Rain and Tears” (a adaptation of Pachelbel’s Canon), which became a European smash hit. Their early sound blended psychedelic rock with symphonic arrangements, Mediterranean melodies, and Roussos’s soaring operatic tenor.
The band’s masterpiece is the sprawling double-album 666 (The Apocalypse of John, Book 13) (1972), a radical progressive rock opus based on the Book of Revelation. By this time, internal tensions (and Vangelis’s growing interest in electronic music) led to the band’s dissolution during the album’s recording. Though *666* was initially overlooked, it later gained cult status as a prog landmark. After the split, Vangelis became a world-renowned composer of electronic and film music (Chariots of Fire, Blade Runner), while Demis Roussos achieved massive success as a solo pop star.
