ABOUT THE BAND

The Moody Blues were formed in 1964. Their first successes came when they were sponsored by the Birmingham M&B brewery and consequently they took the name MB5 for a while, changing it soon after to The Moody Blues.

Their original formation was composed by Ray Thomas (Voice, flute, percussion and harmonica), Mike Pinder (Keyboards and voice), Denny Laine (Voice and guitar), Clint Warwick (Bass and voice) and Graeme Edge (Drums) and their version of “Go Now” reached number one in January 1965. However, their subsequent releases were not as successful and Laine and Warwick left the band.

At the end of 1966, Justin Hayward, from Swindon, replaced Laine on lead guitar and vocals, and John Lodge, Justin’s partner on Brummie, replaced Warwick on bass and vocals. These new members took on the role of lead songwriters and it was then that the band moved from relying mainly on cover versions to a unique combination of classic, symphonic, progressive and psychedelic rock.
