ABOUT THE BAND

The Sister Of Mercy is one of the most recognized bands and stands out well above the second wave of Gothic rock. The group took its name from a song by singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen; they were formed in Leeds, England, in 1980 by Andrew Eldritch (vocals, born as Andrew Taylor) and Gary Marx (guitar, born as Mark Pairman) with the help of a drum machine, the legendary Doktor Avalanche. Originally a DR-55 was used, then it was replaced by a Roland TR-606 and during the recording of the first album a TR-808 was used.

They recorded a single on their own Merciful Release label entitled “The Damage Done”, in their own words “to be heard on the radio”. After that, the band decided to expand their roster with Craig Adams (bass) and Ben Gunn (guitar) to support The Clash and Psychedelic Furs. They gained a good reputation and released a couple more singles as well as several radio sessions on the BBC that allowed them to keep touring the islands. – The Sisters of Mercy Discography 320kbps
