ABOUT THE BAND

Thin Lizzy was an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1969, best known for their energetic twin-guitar harmonies, poetic lyrics, and the charismatic presence of frontman Phil Lynott. Blending hard rock, blues, and folk influences, the band rose to fame in the 1970s with hits like “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Whiskey in the Jar,” and “Jailbreak.” Lynott, as the primary songwriter and bassist, became one of rock’s first Black icons, infusing their music with storytelling and working-class grit. Despite numerous lineup changes, Thin Lizzy’s raw, melodic sound left a lasting impact on rock and metal, influencing bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden.

Though Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983 after Lynott’s struggles with addiction led to his tragic death in 1986, their legacy endured through reunions and tributes. Guitarists like Gary Moore, Scott Gorham, and Brian Robertson became legends in their own right, while Lynott’s lyrical depth and soulful voice kept the band’s music alive. In 2010, a new iteration, Black Star Riders, was formed by former members to honor Thin Lizzy’s spirit while creating new music.
