Nickelback is formed in Hanna, a city in the state of Alberta, Canada, after Chad Kroeger convinced his brother Mike, his cousin Brandon and his friend Ryan Peake to move to Vancouver and record ten songs that he had composed in 1996. After a first EP titled Hesher would come the album Curb to finally record The State, originally released in November 1999 and released again in March 2000 with some changes in the cover to enhance the name of the group.

The State would manage to put the songs Breathe and Leader Of Men on the local rock charts and at the same time would serve to introduce the new drummer Ryan Vikedal who would replace Brandon Kroeger.

Soon Nickelback would start touring Canada, even reaching the United States, having the possibility to alternate with bands such as 3 Doors Down, Creed and Fuel. Shortly before entering the prestigious Green House Studios, Chad Kroeger was rehearsing one of the songs from the following album. It was How You Remind Me, the song with which they would conquer the world.
