ABOUT THE BAND

Placebo was formed when Brian Molko ,after attempting to enter the theater career, met Stefan Olsdal by chance at South Kensington Station on the London Underground in 1994. Molko and Olsdal had gone to the same school, but strangely enough they never crossed paths until that meeting when they realised that they shared musical tastes. It was then that they decided to form a band.

The first name of the band was Ashtray Heart but soon they chose the name Placebo. The first option of Molko to complete the group was the drummer Steve Hewitt, another acquaintance of his who immediately was interested in the project, but in that moment Hewitt already was with the London group Breed for which Robert Schultzberg in a principle alternated with Hewitt the place of drummer in the group, nevertheless Hewitt already was participating actively with Placebo. When they got their first contract in 1996 Hewitt did not appear as a member. Instead Schultzberg recorded together with Molko and Olsdal the first disc of the group, the homonymous Placebo of that same year. Soon after, Molko and Olsdal began to have differences with Schultzberg who left the band. This is how Hewitt became the third member of Placebo before the end of 1996.

In 1998 they recorded their second album, Without You I’m Nothing, which projected them out of England thanks to the theme Pure Morning and the participation of David Bowie singing with Molko the theme that gives name to the album. Also in that year they recorded a version of 20th Century Boy, original song of the group T Rex, for the soundtrack of the movie Velvet Goldmine in which ,in addition, they appear. The following year they appeared at the Brit Awards ceremony playing 20th Century Boy together with David Bowie. Currently David Bowie is considered the godfather of Placebo, due to the support he has given them since they began their career. – Placebo Discography 320 kbps
