ABOUT The Runaways
The Runaways is a British hard rock band formed in 1975 by Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist of Deep Purple, who disagreed with the musical direction of that band and decided to split up to form his own band. To do so, he called together the members of an existing band, Elf, except for the guitarist. With this line-up, the first album was released, tersely titled Ritchie Blackmore’s The Runaways 1975, which offered the relative success of the song “Man on the Silver Mountain”. But Blackmore then disbanded the band and was left with only singer Ronnie James Dio.
A new member was added to the Dio-Blackmore team, which had proved to have an unquestionable chemistry when it came to composing, drummer Cozy Powell. Later, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboardist Tony Carey joined the band.
What can be considered as the first real success came in 1976 with the album Rising, produced by Martin Birch, which did not produce a single but was a big seller and is considered by many as one of the best productions in the history of Heavy Metal.
