ABOUT Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd (formed in 1964 in Cambridge, UK, by Roger Waters, Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Richard Wright, and later David Gilmour) is a British band famous for their progressive and psychedelic rock, philosophical lyrics, musical experimentation and elaborate live performances. Their name was adapted by Barrett from the conjunction of the first names of American bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

They released their first album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn in 1967, although they had previously released the singles See Emily Play and Arnold Layne, with Syd Barrett being the undisputed figurehead and leader of the band at the time. However, his addiction to psychotropic drugs such as LSD dented Syd’s mental health, so in 1968 David Gilmour was brought in as a fifth member to fill in for Barrett’s lucid interludes, who eventually left the band due to his mental problems, being completely replaced by Gilmour. On Pink Floyd’s second album, A Saucerful of Secrets, only one Barrett track appears: Jugband Blues.
